West End Alexandria

Grace Church of Alexandria meets in the diverse and densely-populated neighborhood of West End Alexandria. Since launching in 2007, we have met in the West End of Alexandria to provide a joyful, vibrant, Bible-based congregation for our neighborhood to explore Christianity and grow deeper in the faith.

Roots of a New Church

In the 1990’s, lead pastor Jonathan Matías was working at a Christian public policy organization in the D.C. Metro area. When a new development–Cameron Station–was built in West End Alexandria, he along with friends Garrett Lee and Shayne McAllister, began praying about forming a new church to spread God’s grace in West End Alexandria.

Partnership With Heritage Bible Church

A congregation with a nationwide vision for planting new churches–Heritage Bible Church in Greer, SC–offered to support this group of friends in forming a gospel-centered church in Alexandria. Heritage trained Jonathan for two years in pastoring and planting, then launched a team of 21 believers to form the new church.

First Meetings at Capitol Hill Baptist Church

Starting in November 2007, our first worship gatherings were held in homes. As we grew, our friends at the like-minded Capitol Hill Baptist Church (the home of 9Marks.org) provided us worship space in their building until we found a place of our own in Alexandria.

Sunday Worship at Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School

Since 2008, we have been meeting for Sunday worship at Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School in Cameron Station. As we’ve grown, we’ve expanded from worshiping in an activity room, to the cafeteria, and now to the gym. An hour before the service starts, practical Bible classes for adults and children meet throughout the building. Small groups meet during the week from Old Town Alexandria and Kingstowne to Arlington, Fairfax and Manassas.

Our Distinctives

We are a deliberate church. Everything we do is shaped by the Bible. We pursue the following biblical distinctive for God’s glory and our joy–

  1. The Centrality of the Gospel (1 Cor. 1:18; 2:2)
  2. Expository Preaching (Nem. 8:2-8; 2 Tim. 2:15)
  3. A Place for Growth and Change (Eph. 4:15-16)
  4. A Church Family Marked by Love and Care (Jn. 15:12; 1 Thess. 3:12)
  5. A Church On Mission, Serving God (Matt. 28:18-20; Rom. 12:6)
  6. Congregationally-Friendly Worship (Col. 3:16)
